Syria has a diverse fauna with about 2500 species (more than 60% from Arthropods) of which 125 species are mammals, 394 of birds (184 of which are resident species while the remainders are winter or summer migrants or species on passage migrants), 127 of reptile, 16 of amphibian and 157 species of freshwater fishes recorded in the country. Human activities have affected the biodiversity of the fauna. Some species of carnivores and herbivores used to be present in the country, while others are declining rapidly such as the Brown Bear and other are still available in some areas.
